How hummingbirds connects its high-integrity carbon projects to buyers with BlueLayer’s Revenue Engine

About hummingbirds

Founded in 2022, hummingbirds is a B Corp certified nature-based solutions (NbS) developer based in Paris, France. With teams across Accra, Nairobi, Mexico City, São Paulo, and Melbourne, hummingbirds co-develops NbS projects from the ground-up: stepping in at the feasibility and pilot stage, where capital is scarcest and a project’s integrity is decided, and staying involved through implementation and credit issuance.

Their portfolio reflects that breadth, as hummingbirds have developed more than 15 projects spanning ARR, REDD+, improved forest management, blue carbon, and improved cookstoves, across Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Europe, each built around community ownership, biodiversity protection, and measurable social impact. In early 2026 the company raised €50 million from a group of development finance institutions to accelerate that pipeline.

Two projects show the kind of work hummingbirds develops, and the supply it now brings to buyers.

Mariposa

An Improved Forest Management (IFM) project in northern Mexico, developed with the Mexican civil society organisation, Montezumae Global Consultores, across 16,000 hectares of community-owned land in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Working with three local communities, the project combines fire management, reforestation, soil improvement, and local timber processing to keep economic benefits in the region while protecting one of Mexico's most biodiverse mountain ranges. It is expected to sequester around 1.9 million tonnes of CO₂e over 30 years and has trained 150 people in sustainable forestry. Certified under the Climate Action Reserve, Mariposa reached its first credit issuance in 2025, making it one of hummingbirds' first projects to move from future supply to credits available to sell today.

Bissap

An improved cookstoves project in rural Benin, developed with S2 Services, deploying 150,000 improved cookstoves to replace traditional three-stone fires. The stoves cut household wood consumption and indoor air pollution, ease pressure on local forests, and save women significant time otherwise spent collecting fuel and cooking, with a dedicated €40,000 annual fund for community projects chosen through local consultation.

The project is expected to avoid an estimated 2.6 million tonnes of CO₂e in 15 years and has created 40 permanent jobs in manufacturing, distribution, and training. Rigorous on-the-ground and digital MRV monitoring have ensured data accuracy and transparency. Certified under the Gold Standard, Bissap is aligned with the ICVCM's Core Carbon Principles and is on track for its first credit issuance in the second half of 2026.

The challenge

With supply secured, both issued and forward, hummingbirds faced a distribution challenge rather than a supply one. The commercial team is small and the routes to buyers were largely manual. Cold outreach to companies was slow and rarely converted, and earning the trust needed to sell directly to end buyers was difficult for a young developer. Much of the team's time went into answering requests for proposals one at a time, and into assembling project teasers and multi-tab spreadsheets by hand for each conversation. As the portfolio grew, keeping that material consistent and current across every project became a task in itself.

Carbon credits are already complex for buyers, so anything that makes an early-stage developer harder to reach, or slower to respond, costs you deals. We needed a faster and more professional way to put our projects in front of the right buyers.

The solution

hummingbirds uses BlueLayer's Revenue Engine as the operating layer for its commercial work. Project data, impact information, and supporting documents sit in one place, so the team can share a consistent, current view of any project rather than rebuilding materials for each buyer. Proposals are assembled in the platform, bringing one or more offers and the relevant documentation into a single package, and the team can see how buyers engage with what they have been sent.

The newest addition is Storefronts: branded pages for a project's inventory and indicative pricing. Each Storefront brings together vintages, available volumes, media, and documents in one place that stay up to date, which the team can share privately with selected buyers or publish for use in public campaigns. Where a Proposal carries a one-to-one commercial offer, a Storefront opens the portfolio up to discovery, giving buyers a clear view of what is available and a direct line back to the team.

Mariposa and Bissap are now presented this way, each through a Storefront that shows live availability alongside the project's impact and documentation.

We used to chase buyers over email and rebuild a proposal from scratch every time. Now we present our projects through BlueLayer and share live availability through Storefronts, so we’re always showing real-time inventory to buyers.

Working with BlueLayer

hummingbirds chose BlueLayer for software built for the carbon market rather than retrofitted to it, and for a team that builds alongside its customers. As hummingbirds' commercial operation matured, the platform became the backbone of how the team presents and sells its portfolio. That working relationship runs in both directions: hummingbirds was one of the developers BlueLayer worked with while designing Storefronts, testing early versions and informing decisions on how inventory and indicative pricing are presented and how buyers engage with a showcase. The result is a tool the team has had a hand in shaping, suited to how a developer of its kind actually goes to market.

While Storefronts are the team’s own direct channel to buyers, BlueLayer also enables hummingbird’s projects to be distributed across its variety of channel partners, such as Abatable, Senken, and Sylvera among others. The two work hand in hand, indirectly reaching buyers who start their search with marketplaces and intermediaries, covering demand on both sides of the aisle.

Looking ahead

With fresh funding, a growing pipeline, and more projects approaching issuance across new geographies and methodologies, hummingbirds has more supply to bring to market each year.

As that supply comes online, BlueLayer is enabling a single place to present its projects, distribute them, and turn buyer interest into orders.
