How Carbon2Nature built operational clarity across a growing carbon portfolio with BlueLayer

How Carbon2Nature built operational clarity across a growing carbon portfolio with BlueLayer
About Carbon2Nature

Carbon2Nature is a nature-based carbon project developer wholly owned by the Iberdrola group, dedicated to address the interlinked crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. The organisation develops high-quality conservation and restoration projects that pair durable carbon sequestration with measurable benefits for local communities, and expects to capture and store more than 60 million tonnes of CO₂ in natural ecosystems over the life of its portfolio. That ambition is already taking measurable shape, as Carbon2Nature manages around 4,000 hectares of restoration projects across its portfolio, with around 5.4 million trees already planted or under implementation. Their portfolio supports 19 local beneficiary communities that are directly involved in the projects and receive simultaneous benefits from them.

The work behind those numbers takes shape project by project. In Brazil, Muçununga, a project in the Atlantic Forest of southern Bahia, is restoring some 1,300 hectares of degraded land and abandoned pasture, with more than 2 million native trees to be planted under Verra's VM0047 methodology.

Separately, in Spain the Ribadeo project at Monte Mondigo is restoring a steep hillside left exposed to erosion after a 2023 fire destroyed a former commercial eucalyptus plantation. Replanting began in 2024, reintroducing maritime pine alongside a rich load of native hardwoods: chestnut, oak, ash, maple and wild cherry among them, to stabilise the soil and rebuild a more diverse, resilient forest.

The challenge

Carbon2Nature initially ran its project tracking and carbon credit inventory across generic workspace tools and spreadsheets. That served the company through its first phase, but as the portfolio expanded across geographies and the team grew more distributed, the limits of this approach became clear.

With colleagues working across different countries, functions, and systems, keeping everyone aligned on a single version of the numbers became increasingly difficult. For a developer operating with the governance and reporting standards of the Iberdrola group, that fragmentation introduced operational complexity and potential risks, particularly in data consistency, reconciliation, and the confidence with which the team could rely on its project information. Managing a portfolio of more than 20 projects called for a purpose-built operating layer rather than a patchwork of files.

The solution

Carbon2Nature adopted BlueLayer to centralise its project information into one platform, giving its dispersed teams a consistent, real-time view of their inventory data.

For Carbon2Nature, the platform’s strongest value has been in its portfolio management, credit inventory control, and risk management capabilities. Cristina Lopez Garcia, the company's Finance and Corporate Director, has led the adoption of the platform and has been closely involved in its implementation and use across the organisation. Utilizing it regularly from a financial planning and reporting perspective, it allows her to maintain an up-to-date and reliable view of the organization’s credit inventory, among other insights. Drawing those outputs from one reliable, centralised dataset means each report rests on the same underlying numbers, which matters for an organisation that reports externally and operates within a larger group.

BlueLayer gives us a single source of truth for our portfolio and carbon credit inventory. This enables us to manage risk and support our finance and reporting processes with confidence, knowing that everyone is working from consistent, reliable data.

How the team uses BlueLayer

Day to day, the team actively uses BlueLayer's credit management function to maintain a consolidated, accurate view of inventory across every project and vintage. Rather than reconciling figures held in different sources, the operations, commercial and finance teams now work from a common record, one that tracks each credit through its lifecycle, from issuance through to retirement.

That structure brings benefits beyond a tidier inventory. Every record carries a clear audit trail, giving the team traceability when it reports to registries, public entities, and partners, while supporting readiness for verification. A single consolidated view also reduces the risk of overselling or reconciliation error as commitments and issuances move across the portfolio. Additionally, as that same data supports budgeting and reporting activities, leadership can plan and report against figures it trusts.

Looking ahead

With a steady pipeline of projects moving from MRV into issuance, Carbon2Nature now treats BlueLayer as an enabler of a growing business. As that portfolio develops, the team plans to make fuller use of the wider platform, including additional product features to support how its credits reach the market as its commercial activity matures.

For a developer committed to delivering high-integrity carbon credits at scale, keeping operations, reporting, and risk management in one trusted place is what frees the team to stay focused on the work that defines it: restoring nature.
